Unit 2: TPR

Total Physical Response

It is time for you to work. Find information on TPR and post your comments on the method, based on the following questions.

1 Do you consider TPR an approach or a method? Justify your answer.
2 What kind of audience/ students do you think would profit more from TPR? Why?
3Think of three topics that can be taught through TPR.

1- I consider TPR as a method, as it matches the definition of method we have seen - a generalized prescribed set of classroom specification for accomplishing linguistic objectives - having its theoretical basis in Krashen’s Natural Approach. Thus, as it says in the text, Asher himself suggested that TPR should be used in association with other methods and techniques.

2- I think children would be the ones to profit more from TPR, as their affective filter is lower than the one in adolescents or adults. They are less self-conscious and less inhibited, so they feel less exposed. This enables them to fully enjoy this type of activities as they assimilate the target language.

3- Three of the various topics that can be taught through TPR are:

- ING form for actions ( “He is…” running, walking, having a shower, etc.)
 Commands (sit down, stand up, clap your hands, walk, close the door, etc.)
 Prepositions (“stand on the chair”, “sit under the table”, “hide behind your classmate”)

Finally, I would like to share an interesting presentation I have found about this method:
